Very Fun Hobby?

In Early This Year The Most Exciting Hobby What We Do For Ya? For I might Fishing is my new Hobby that might be I did at the beginning of this year, many places fishing, river didanau or on the fringe fields are shaded and cool.

When the weekend arrives I plan to fish in rice fields near the border village, a lot of friends fishing there, maybe this is one Very Fun Hobby for me now, to relieve fatigue and stress on my mind after a week of hard work.

I also again want to play Mount high and full of big trees, but people said a lot of snakes and wild animals, I'm so scared?

Cycling also became less cool, because hot air near the housing and less friendly, I expect 5 years of air around the house can be refreshed with the plants that I planted a year ago.

It feels like the end came quickly pekanku now, fishing is a hobby that I need lalkukan.

I've written about how to let people know more about who you are so they understand who is behind the scenes of your blog. I've also challenged you to write about what you really know and are considered an expert in, giving you a chance to brag. Now it's time for a different kind of Blogging Challenge.

Blog about your favorite hobby.

Yes, hobbies are personal, but sometimes hobbies are professional. Some people turn their hobbies into multi-million dollar companies, and others turn their hobbies into their blogs. Either way, what you do in your "free" time is your choice and another part of the puzzle of who you are.

During my travels, I've met all kinds of people who do all kinds of things, and what surprises me the most is what they do in their "off-time". I've meet people whose hobbies range from miniature trains (building whole countries for their trains to run through) to people who spend the summer catching butterflies and the winter gluing them into plastic/crystal gift containers with fake flowers to sell in gift shops around the country. I've met people who collect umbrellas, books, rocks, guitars, houses, land, pottery, dishes, silverware, old photographs, stamps, coins, pillows, movies, dolls, miniatures, miniature boxes, post cards, and toys. I've had fun learning from people who tat, knit, crochet, sew, play with clay, collect and share tea at tea parties, create costumes, cook, decorate, race bikes, sky dive, build and fly planes, restore ancient airplanes and houses, cut hair, paint fingernails, make fishing flies, fix machines, and do a wide range of things for little or no money, or a lot of money, but do it for the fun of it, not the "work" of it.

Some hobbies become more than just something to do. They come together with other enthusiasts to share their passion, experience, knowledge, and to buy and sell. My husband and I went to a doll and toy show in North Carolina. We found people eager to talk to anyone about all the toys and dolls they had collected and available for sale, where they were made, how they were made, who had owned them, creating entire biographies for each toy. We found a small plastic robot made of bright colors for USD $800.00. Some people are very serious about their toys. We found tons of toys and games we threw away from our childhoods, now worth hundreds and, in some cases, thousands of dollars. To us this is junk, but to fans, this is gold. Amazing.

What people collect always interests us. I met a woman who collects post cards as she travels. And not just any post cards. She is an expert on post cards. She knows just about everything there is to know about the post card industry and collecting hobby. I didn't realize there was so much to know about post cards. She went through one of my grandmother's photo albums with very old post cards and the values she estimated on many of them might have helped pay off those college debts sooner, if I'd know about them then. Yikes!

In the Middle East, I met a man who turned his childhood hobby for taking things apart and putting them together as a child into a lifetime passion of fixing sewing machines. With huge stubby fingers, he handled tiny sewing machines parts and pieces with the skill of a surgeon, a smile never leaving his face, even now at 70 years old, willing to talk to anyone for hours about the wonders of the sewing machine.

The passion and enthusiasm I've seen for people's hobbies has also been amazing. Get them talking about their miniature trains or butterflies and the eyes glow, the face changes. The whole body changes positions, standing taller, and leaning in closer. Some people are extremely serious about their hobbies, their brows furrowing with concentration as they speak, but others start vibrating and jumping up and down as they share their passion for what they do.

A hobby is a complex thing. For some it's their work, for others, it's what they do after work. My job is my passion and I love it, but I know that I have to take mental breaks away from what I do in order to clear my head and keep the energy flowing. So I use hobbies to keep my brain active learning and trying new things. For many years, I had a rule that every six months I would learn something new and try it for six months. If I liked it, I'd add it to my repertoire of things I enjoy doing, but if I didn't, then I'd understand why and walk away to the next thing. I learned a lot during those six month intervals, and found many things I adore doing and many I don't. What was more important is that I learned more about me, and flexed and expanded my brain in the process. This makes my work even better, giving me even more enthusiasm for it.

Your work might be your hobby. But don't assume it is. Don't look at this challenge as another opportunity to talk about what you do and promote your work. Look deep into your heart at where you get the fuel and enthusiasm to get through the day doing what you do so you can do what you really want to do. It could be playing guitar, singing, walking, hiking, photography, archeology, writing, studying history, reading, whatever it is, you think about it during the day and anticipate doing it. If that is your job, then great. Go for it. If it isn't, let us know why.

It's part of you, so tell the world what it is you do that you call your hobby. Tell us why you do it, what it means to you, and what keeps you working at it over the years.

Your blogging challenge is to write about your hobby. Who cares if it has nothing to do with your blog, it's part of who you are and how you express yourself outside of your work.

Loading time improvements with Javascript

This is another tidbit for coders.
(To be honest, I'm just finding enough time to do some finishing touches for my drafts which are gathering dust and post them here!)

We come up with new hacks, invariably with a javascript file attached. You add all the hacks, end up with a truckload of javascript includes and thus, a longer loading time.

THE ROOT CAUSE
The real problem is the sequential nature of XHTML. XHTML is parsed a tag at a time. So, if you have a couple of lines like this:

<script type="text/javascript" src="script2.js"></script>

the files are loaded as follows:
The parser first encounters the first script tag. It then slowly retrieves script1.js and loads it into memory, which takes a lot of time. The parser thinks this is the best time to take a nap and doesn't proceed to parse the next script tag until the current download of script1.js is finished.

See the circled portion above. Never mind the loading times. The stuff to notice is that scriptaculous.js doesn't start loading until prototype.js finishes loading.
Now, we have a hell lot of bandwidth going wasted during this time. We can do other activities in parallel. But how to do it?

THE FIX
The simple answer: Load the scripts asynchronously!
I call it EOF. EOF for Execute-Open-Forget. (Well!! These things ought to have a geeky name!) We execute a javascript function, request for a download of script1.js, forget it, and execute the function again with another argument for a download of script2.js

The result is very evident from the following graph below.

Again, don't worry about the load times of singular files. We cannot improve it for the user. But check out the total time taken for the two javascript files circled. It is lesser because the second one starts even before the first one is finished. This difference will be evident if the javascript files are large and takes a few seconds to load.

Now you might be asking how to make it an EOF?
That's what Javascript is here for. We use Javascript to load a Javascript file. It cannot get weirder.

Check out this nifty function:

Now you can load any number of functions using the function.
You just have to add the calls wherever you want

This can go anywhere in the code, including onload event.

BE SMARTER
This technique can be used cleverly in specific situations.
For example, you may be using some JS libraries for some of your hacks. If the hacks don't show up during loading and does only when uses does some action, we can set a timer to load the script in background after, say, 5 seconds. The main page will be loaded in a jiffy, and the user will be effectively hoodwinked.
This will result in a really critical timing issue, if not handled carefully. Too much of timeout, and the user may get ample time to tamper with the related hack before the script is loaded.

You can also place the loadScript() call at some convenient place in the HTML code. It can be as far as the bottom portion of your HTML just before body tag, so that the page is rendered very fast. (Again, the above problem holds good here also.)

CAVEATS
Everything comes with a price. This too has its own deficiencies. Some which I know of:
1. This one is because of the different behavior of IE. IE and Firefox both can download scripts in the manner specified above. The difference is that IE executes them in the order they finish downloading, whereas Firefox executes them in the order they are appended to the DOM.
This means that your scripts cannot have dependencies on each other in IE. You can get away sometimes, if you are not using the script files until long after loading. (An example is my AJAX Labels Hack)
Update: You have to be really careful that you don't allow the user to make calls to a particular function in the dependent script in that case. The only advantage that you can get is a slight improvement in overall loading time.
2. You can download more than two files at the same time only if they are from different domains or subdomains. Normal browsers (including Firefox) can open only upto 2 simultaneous HTTP connections to a domain. If you try to download too many files at the same time, you may even witness bottlenecks. So use this discreetly.

Picasa users who passionately use geo-tagging will be happy to know that Google-earth you can search-hobby-with-google-earth has enabled them to upload their images straight from Picasa Web Album (Picasa is a software download from Google that helps you organize, edit, and share your photos. It's free, and easy to use.) to Panoromio, show my panoramio image which is Google's geotagging-inclined photo-sharing site. This was done with the intention of offering users to share the interesting locations they have been to and the great photography talent that they have. Another impressive thing is that now Google has released an updated client and Picasa 3.6 now supports about 38 languages.

Upload Your Photo Nature album and other by geo-tagging now, to upload an image from Picasa Web Albums to Panoramio, the photo must have a location associated with it (geo-tagged) and should be in a public album. The photo would further get an "Upload to Panoramio" link under the Photo Location map. You should have a Panoramio account or create one in order to upload any photo. Once these requirements are met, everything else is pretty straightforward to work with.
